Where Horses Empower Lives
Uplifting partnerships that inspire confidence, healing, and lasting joy

Who we are

Sam and Socks is the story of a true friendship between Samantha and her pony Socks. Their incredible friendship began years ago. Sam who is visually and learning disabled met Socks at a local riding school. Samantha, unsure of the world she was living in and Socks untrusting and often naughty, bonded instantly!  Socks became her gateway to a better world and Samantha taught Socks to trust.

This is the human/horse connection truly demonstrated. The Sam & Socks team would love to help create this kind of friendship, build confidence, trust, communication skills, and fun for children and adults of all abilities.

We offer private and group riding lessons tailored to each rider’s comfort level and motor abilities, with clear learning goals and measurable progress plans. For nervous or first-time riders, choose our Connection & Bonding Session — a guided, hands-on program that builds confidence through grooming, safe groundwork, gentle handling, and positive reinforcement techniques.

What to expect

  • A personalized lesson plan after an initial assessment to match skills and goals.

  • Safety-first instruction every step of the way, including mounting/dismounting, rein and leg cues, and emergency procedures.

  • Confidence-building exercises and stepwise exposure for hesitant riders.

Programs and scheduling

  • Weekly private or group lessons with flexible scheduling and progress checkpoints.

  • Trail rides from our Gilroy location with direct access to scenic trails — pre-ride safety briefings and route options provided.

  • Seasonal spring and summer camps with themed curricula, daily skill goals, and small group ratios.

  • Birthday parties that include a supervised horse interaction, basic riding/demo, and safety orientation.

How to get started

  • Book an initial assessment to receive a customized lesson plan and recommended program.

  • Select single lessons, lesson packages, or camp/party dates — payment and availability confirmed on booking.

  • Arrive 15 minutes early for your first session to complete a safety waiver and meet your instructor and horse.

All services emphasize horse welfare and rider safety. Contact us to schedule your assessment and begin a confident, enjoyable journey with horses.

Bring every ride to life with confidence, calm, and connection. At Sam and Socks Riding School & Sanctuary, we transform nervousness into courage, confusion into clarity, and hesitation into harmony between you and your horse. Our patient instructors break down skills into achievable steps, while our gentle, well-trained horses help riders progress safely and joyfully. Whether you’re just starting or aiming for the next level, expect lessons that build strong technique, steady nerves, and real partnership.

Join us and feel the difference: safer rides, faster progress, and the quiet pride of a true connection with your horse.

Our Equine team is made up of horses that have found a new purpose. Some have come from rescues, aged out of a former sports, abandoned, owners have outgrown them or some never had a purpose. We train them to become sensitive lesson horses while retaining their own unique personalities.

Our services focus around the following 4 principles:

  1. CONNECTING

  2. CARING

  3. COACHING

  4. CONFIDENCE BUILDING

Sam and Socks Riding School’s horses live on a tranquil private farm in Gilroy, CA, where every lesson takes place in an intimate, dedicated arena. Riders receive focused, one-on-one instruction in a safe, peaceful setting — or head out for scenic local trail rides just down the road, connecting learning to real-world riding in nature.
